How Much Do Movers Cost?

How Much Do Movers Cost? The age old question

We often get emails along the lines of, “Hi, I’m moving from one Arlington apartment to Wellesley, and I’ve never hired movers. How much do movers cost?

As you can guess, our moving company in MA definitely needs more information to provide an accurate quote. (For example, to offer a rate, we need a full inventory of boxes and furniture, a breakdown of the stair and/or elevator situation, and a target date for the move.) These kinds of questions are especially tricky with recent inflation and price increases making long- and medium-term financial planning more difficult for everyone — so knowing the cost of moving will be is an even more pressing concern than ever.

So the short answer is that we need more than basic information in order to offer a rate. However, even with very minimal information, our team of movers in Boston can offer a general sense of what kind of budget you should plan when looking to hire movers in the Boston area. These figures are accurate as of February 2024, and we’ll try to update them as needed.

How much do movers cost to move a single item?

We do regularly perform single item moves, but cost depends on the item and the driving distance involved. It’s hard for us to get much below $200, but contact us and we’ll give you the best deal we can.

How about larger moves?

A studio apartment or small 1 bedroom apartment with minimal stairs will require 2 movers with a 16ft truck, generally costing between $120 and $160 per hour between October and March. Of course, from April through September, the cost would be a little higher — from around $160 per hour up to $250 per hour for peak dates.

A one bedroom apartment in an elevator building or smaller 2br apartment with stairs requires 3 movers costing between $150 and $200 per hour between October and March. Of course, from April through September, the cost would be a little higher — from around $170 per hour up to $300 per hour for peak dates.

A two-bedroom apartment will usually require a 24- or 26-foot truck and three or four movers, which would generally cost between $170 and $240 per hour between October and March. Of course, from April through September, the cost would be a little higher — from around $220 per hour up to $350 per hour.

With a larger, say, 5-bedroom house, you might be looking at five or six movers and multiple trucks. That would put the off-season rate between $300 and $450 per hour. Again, the summer and on weekends would have higher rates, like in other MA moving companies.

These aren’t firm numbers, and your moving rate will depend on the details of your particular situation. Plus, our rates do change over time. But they should give you a basic idea of what most local movers will charge.
