Getting into Boston or up to the North Shore is easy from Medford, as Interstate 93 cuts right through the city. Additionally, more than a dozen MBTA bus routes serve the city, bringing passengers to Cambridge, Arlington, Somerville, and downtown Boston. Wellington Station connects Medford to Jamiaca Plain via the Orange Line train, and West Medford Square is a stop on the Lowell Commuter Rail Line. So whichever direction you’re going, you can get there from Medford.

Most famously, Medford resident James Pierpont wrote the Christmas classic “Jingle Bells” some time around 1857. But that’s not all. About a decade earlier, an anti-slavery activist named Lydia Maria Child wrote a Thanksgiving poem called “Over the River and Through the Wood.” The poem was later set to music and became the famous song we know today.
